Have you ever made art? What kind of art do you like?
I've made many different types of art - singing on the church choir (or horribly in my car), dancing, paintings (see below), instrumental music (I used to play the violin), and creative writing pieces. I've never been in a play.
I have an appreciation for all types of art, but my favorite form is dancing.
Have made a drawing, painting, sculpture?
This is a replica of a painting that I did in the fourth grade at Devon Forest Elementary School. The original hung in our district's office for a school year and is now retired and permanently hangs in DFE's front office
Me with Ms. Anderson, my Art Teacher at DFE.
Have you ever been to a museum, gallery, or artist studio?
I have visited the Gibbes Museum of Art in Downtown Charleston.
Growing up in the Charleston area, I was able to visit many art galleries, but my favorite is Gallery Chuma. The Nwokike's and my family attend the same church.
Have you ever been to a play, opera, art film?
I've been to several plays, but never an opera or an art film.
The first play I remember attending was seeing A Christmas Carol in the fourth grade at the Dockstreet Theater. My senior year of high school I viewed Syringa Tree in Dockstreet and Beauty in the Beast at the Sottile Theater. The show of Beauty and the Beast is one of the best plays I have ever seen!
I was the choreographer for the stageplay, Crowns, for the 2008 Moja Arts Festival.
Do you dance?
We are all known as the "original" Mt. Moriah Praise Dancers - we all had a love for dance through formal training, but were eager to dance in church. It took a few years, but our church eventually became open to adding a Liturgical (Praise) Dance Ministry to the Youth Worship Arts Ministry. (I'm third from the left - the girl in front of me is still one of my best friends.)
This was at our instructor's wedding reception.
This is a video from the National Baptist Convention Youth Rally. Dancers audition to be part of the production and minister. This is one of two dances that some of us ministered in that week - we learned two dances in about four days! This is from 2009 when the convention was in Detroit, Michigan.
Under what conditions do you learn the most?
I learn the most when I am in a relaxed setting.
Why are you taking this class?
This class fulfills my fine arts requirement for my major - Elementary Education.
Have you ever looked at art or anything really and been moved by what your eyes see?
The first thing that comes to my mind is dance - I love to see a passionate dancer. It makes me feel like I'm on stage with them and I can almost anticipate their next move. A passionate dancer makes me then have a greater appreciation for whatever song or genre of music they're dancing to.
What inspires you?
I'm not entirely sure what inspires me. What lights a fire under me? What makes me excited - other than shopping? What inspires me? This is something that I've been thinking about that a lot when answering these questions; I have a strange urge to start a blog, but I have no idea what I want to blog about.
Do you consider that movies are a form of art? How about video games, Comics, Television?
Movies are culminations of many types of art forms - theater, visual arts, music, dance, and writing.
Video games, comics, and television are also art. Comics are probably more obvious art forms than video games or T.V., but they are similar to movies in how they're constructed.
Who decides what is good art?
Deeming art as "good" is very individualized. It varies from person to person and maybe even day to day. I may think that a painting is horrible today, but next week, I may think that it's beautiful because of a change in the way I view it.
When you debate music with your friends what are your critical elements or standards to which you hold the music to?
I usually don't debate music with my friends - I'm usually the last person to know about new music that comes out!
What was the best movie you saw last year?
I loved Black Swan, The Blind Side, and Inception!
What is an Art Film?
An art film is a film that is not going to be viewed by a mainstream audience. I've never viewed an art film, so I'm excited about seeing one this month.
What music is in your ipod or mp3 player, car, albumns?
My iPhone4 is how I listen to music the most and it's usually via Pandora. The stations that I listen to the most are Toni Braxton, Glee Cast Radio, Beyonce, and Whitney Houston.
